Sacrament of Matrimony

In the New Testament, Jesus makes reference

to this verse from the Book of Genesis,

“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.”

The very first step in preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony is to call the parish office at least 6 months in advance in order to secure a wedding date and to begin the pre-marriage preparations. You will speak with the Sacramental Coordinator to initiate this preparation. The wedding date is tentative until you meet with the priest or deacon. At that initial appointment, the priest or deacon will discuss and explain the requirement of sacramental marriage. St. Julie has a Marriage Preparation Program which fulfills the Archdiocesan requirements.

Marriage Preparation and Wedding Planning

Jesus Christ raised matrimony to a sacrament for the salvation and benefit of the husband and wife, and their children, should God so bless them with life. God calls some but not all to marriage. Marriage as a sacrament differs from ordinary marriage; it is a true source of grace for the spouses, and it unites husband and wife in a holy bond before God. Marriage as a sacrament is between one man and one woman, and only death can break the bond of this sacrament. Those who love unto marriage become two in one flesh. The couple grows closer together and remains open to having children and raising them in the faith. The married couple cooperates with God’s creative act of bringing new life into this world. Matrimony is a holy union created by God. The sacrament gives the spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life.
