Making the Word of God Accessible…
It was way back in the ‘dark ages’ of 1985 when I was first asked to be a catechist
for my son’s sixth grade religious education class. To say that I was terrified would
be an understatement. First of all, even though I played teacher with all my cousins
when I was growing up, I wasn’t really a teacher. And second of all, the sixth grade
curriculum had an emphasis on the Old Testament stories. Yikes!!! The Bible???? I
knew what the Bible was. There had been a really beautiful one sitting on my
parent’s coffee table for years. But I had never read it. My dad did…often. But not
me, nor my brother or my sister for that matter. That first year teaching was
excruciating. So I checked out the Bible Study at my parish but it was for groups
who had been reading and praying with the scriptures for a long time. And when I
went to the book store, there were a gazillion different books on how to study
the bible. My dilemma was how to pick the right one for me, a Catholic who had
never cracked open a bible in her life!! Well, I muddled through that first year and
by the second year, I was falling in love with all the stories of the Old Testament.
So much so, that I yearned to go to the next level about understanding Scripture.
So, by 1989 I was knee-deep in formal classes at the Calumet College of St. Joseph
in Whiting, Indiana. It was the best move I ever made in my life!!
Have you have been wanting to read the bible and pray with the scriptures but
don’t know where to start? If so, St. Julie is hosting an “Introduction to the Bible.”
This Study is constructed for the beginner. We will cover such topics as, “The
Bible as God’s Self-Revelation,” “Choosing a Bible Today,” “The Word of God in
Human Words,” and “The Importance of Biblical Scholarship.” (to name a few)
Please fill out the registration form below and return to the parish office by
Monday, October 1st. We will be using the Little Rock Scripture Study resource.
You will need to bring a Bible using the New American Bible translation.
