Everything you wanted to know
How important is the
Bible for Catholics?
Used to be only Protestants read the Bible. They
had the bible and we had the Mass, the saints, the statues, and a whole
bunch of other stuff.
Now the Scriptures are reverently carried in procession, placed in a
position of honor on the. altar or pulpit, held high during the Alleluia,
and sometimes incensed before being proclaimed. Hopefully, we have
lectors, deacons, and presiders who proclaim the Word as if it is the most
important thing people hear that week. It is!
At Eucharist God comes to us in both Word and Sacrament. Each has infinite
power to change our lives.
What's important is that we plug into this power throughout the week. The
Word we hear on Sunday will mean more if we read it by ourselves early in
the week, prayed over it, discussed it with family, neighbors, or friends.
We need no degree in Scripture to reflect on what strikes us right now as
the most important line or idea in a reading and what do we think God is
asking us to do through this message.
