A Pause That Refreshes

At all our Masses, as you may have noticed, there is now a distinct period of silence after each of the scripture readings and after the proclamation of the Gospel. This silence is intended as an opportunity for us to reflect on what we have just heard, to fix something from the readings in our minds and hearts to carry with us for the rest of the day and week.

Here is a way to use that brief silence: During the readings, try to be alert for any particular phrase or idea that strikes you. Keep it in mind and think about it during the short silence that follows; then take it with you as your personal "word" for the week. Call it to mind on awaking and think about it as you go through your daily routines. When your mind turns to the problems or worries that you face, gently supplant them with this Word of the Lord and let it strengthen and refresh you.
