You can help the victims of
Hurricane Katrina

One hundred twenty or more people from
the New Orleans area are being housed at the state facility at 183rd and
Harlem. They have the capacity to take 150 more as time goes by.
What can you do to help?
Any of the following.....
....EVERYTHING HELPS!
(please give us names,
phone numbers and emails if possible of any volunteers)
-
We will need many
people to form cooking teams for meals. Please let us know by phone or
email if you can help with this. Once we have it organized, we will call
you. Let us know if you can help with breakfast, lunch or dinner or a
certain day of the week.
-
If you are trained in
the medical field, they need doctors, nurses, psychologists, counselors,
dentists, etc. Let us know if you are available and what day of the week
is good for you. We will pass that information on to the person who will be
coordinating that area and they will contact you.
-
They will need
volunteers to come for four hour shifts for day to day various duties.
Sometimes it will to just be a friendly face and an ear to listen. It may
be to play games or read to the children, whatever is needed. The tentative shifts would be
something like 11 - 3, 3 - 7, 7 - 11, 11 - 3. I'm sure there will be some
flexibility. What looks like it might work for you?
-
We are also looking for
people, age 21 or older, to help run errands for and with the residents.
It may be that they'll need to get some shoes or pick out clothing from a
resale shop. This is extremely important because we want them to retain
their dignity and self-respect during these difficult days.
-
Tutors for homework may
be needed at some point. Let us know if you can help!
-
Last but certainly not
least donations: St. Julie is taking a collection at all the masses next Sunday.
Please give what you can. You may also mail it to St. Julie to the
attention of Deacon Ed Pluchar. If you are writing a check, please make it payable to St. Julie with "Hurricane
relief" in the memo.
-
The response to the plea for clothing
and other goods has been very generous and has exceeded our immediate
needs. Thank you. Together We Cope may be taking donations of clothing
and toiletries. Pleas call first. See the links at the left for opportunities to offer
help through PADS and the Village of Tinley Park.
As we get more information,
we will pass that on. Please help in any way that you can and feel free to
invite friends, neighbors and family members to help as well.
If you have any questions please contact Deacon Ed or Sheila.
