When families lose a loved one, it is our privilege to assist in planning the liturgy.

This is what happens. Typically, the family will contact a funeral home, and arrange a time to go in to make the arrangements. Our local funeral directors know that we want to meet with each family, so once the date and time of the visitation and the funeral mass have been decided, they will call St. Julie, and notify us, and tell us when they think they will be finished with their arrangements.

It is always our intent to meet with the family at the funeral home. We do that for the family’s convenience. Generally there is very little time and so many arrangements to be made, and if we can meet them at the funeral home, it spares them another stop.

During the intake, we will first get the names of family members, living and deceased that we will remember in prayer during the General Intercessions. We will ask them to tell us things about their loved one that we will share with the priest for his homily. In addition to a reflection on the chosen Scripture, both of our priests use this information in their homilies.

Families are given booklets of Old and New Testament readings to look at so they can select appropriate readings. They are also invited to have a friend or family member proclaim the readings, though we are always willing to provide a lector.

We look at a list of song selections, and we have a CD that includes most of the music in case the titles are not familiar. We print a worship aid that includes the deceased’s name and the music chosen for the Mass. Sometimes families will include in the worship aid some type of testimonial about the deceased. A parish cantor and accompanist is always provided.

And just as funeral homes offer pre-arrangements, sometimes families choose to pre-arrange the funeral Mass as well.

Families need not worry about making arrangements for mass on their own. We are here to provide all the help and guidance you need.
