Is the Word of God an Important Word in Your Life?
Related to the importance of Scripture in our lives, I
came across this quote. In an address to the Catholic Biblical Federation
in May, Pope John Paul II noted that "a growth in knowledge and
love of the Bible" among Roman Catholics has been one of the
fruits of Vatican II. He then spelled out the importance of maintaining
and increasing this knowledge and love:
Without a sound understanding of Scripture, there will not be that
fullness of Christian prayer which begins with the experience of listening
to God's word. Nor will there be that powerful Christian preaching which
rises from the experience of hearing God's word and opens the ears of the
faithful to hear what the preacher himself has heard first. Nor will there
be a Christian theology which speaks the great truth of God's word rather
than the uncertainties of human opinion.
Also, the people involved in education ministry and Scripture Study have
asked me to share these thoughts with you:
- "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God...
- We "people of the Word/Book" (Christians, Jews, Moslems)
depend on the revelations we have received through the Word when it is
rightly understood.
-The Word (Christ) can make his word known to all who are willing to
receive it no matter what their status or ability, because the Spirit
moves where it will to reveal it. So,
for those who hear, "let them hear."
Christ's words, parables, teachings, and example give us a "world
view" that extends far beyond what we can now see and experience
on our own.
A studied understanding of the scriptures, which reveal Christ's mind to
us, can lift us, raise us, and resurrect us into the very "world-view"
of Christ, the Word and Son of God.
