We present the pages in
this section to introduce you to
the
Sacraments of
the Catholic Church
The Catholic Church is a
"Sacramental Church" . The whole liturgical life of the
Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the
sacraments. There are seven sacraments in the Church: Baptism,
Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick,
Holy Orders, and Matrimony.
These pages will introduce you
to these seven sacraments. Each page will also provide links to
other pages or external web sites for those who wish additional
information.
-
Baptism
by which a person is indelibly marked as a follower of
Christ. It is the first of the sacraments of initiation.
-
Confirmation
by which a person's baptism is sealed and the person
receives the Holy Spirit. This is the second of the
sacraments of initiation.
-
Eucharist
by witch the person receives the Body and Blood of Christ.
This is the continuing Sacrament of initiation, renewing us
in Christ each time it is received.
-
Reconciliation
by which the person is absolved of sin renewing the
relationship with God. Formerly known as Confession or
Penance.
-
Anointing of the Sick
by which a person is commended to God that he may be healed
in body and soul.
-
Holy Orders
by which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles
continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of
time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry. It
includes three degrees: episcopate, presbyterate, and
diaconate.
-
Matrimony
by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a
partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered
toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and
education of offspring; this covenant between baptized
persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of
a sacrament.
